Early Years Foundation Stage

Here at the Convent the Early Years consist of:

  • a full time Nursery called Apple Tree Nursery
  • three Reception classes called Ash Tree Class, Holly Tree Class and Lime Tree Class

Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum

The curriculum is called the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and is a statutory document which was introduced in September 2012. The curriculum is for all children between the ages of 0 and 5 years and therefore includes the first two years of your child’s school life during both the Nursery and Reception.

We  follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum called 'Development Matters' which is based upon the following 7 areas of learning which is then further split into 2 or 3 areas under each.

The curriculum is divided into seven areas of learning. These are:

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

 Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Expressive Arts and Design
  • Understanding the World

The curriculum is underpinned by the three principles of effective learning:

  • Playing and Exploring
  • Active Learning
  • Creating and Thinking Critically

All of these areas are covered within the planning. The curriculum map gives an overview of what objectives the children will be learning.

Your child’s early years experience should be happy, active, exciting and fun and should support their development and learning needs.

Assessment in the EYFS

In the EYFS – Nursery Class and Reception Class the staff use an online learning journal for recording observations, photos and videos of the children across the seven areas of learning.
